Heritage

Destroyed by war,
saved from abandonment.

You are in the Somme, in the heart of the Hauts-de-France. Destroyed during the First World War, the church of Becquincourt was rebuilt in 1930. Then it was deconsecrated and left to decay: it came close to being destroyed a second time.

When I took it over, it was on its last legs: holes of more than a metre in the roof, no gutters, hundreds of pigeons inside, bricked-up windows, cement that stopped the brick from breathing, and pierced louvres through which rain came into the bell tower at the slightest storm.

I saved it to safeguard the heritage of my village, respecting the work of the elders, the trades that built it in 1930:

  • Masons
  • Bricklayers
  • Stonemasons
  • Carpenters
  • Roofers
  • Zinc workers
  • Joiners
  • Locksmiths and ironworkers
  • Glaziers
  • Plasterers
  • Tilers
  • Decorative painters

No photograph of this reconstruction exists. As with so many churches, farms and schools rebuilt after the war, all that remains are architects’ plans, estimates and letters. These craftsmen worked in the shadows: all that remains of them is their work.

All over France, churches are closed or under threat. I am opening this one to the public to give it a future.

A word from Luc

The story of a building that refuses to disappear.

This site tells the story of the former church of Becquincourt: its construction, the war years, its reconstruction, its abandonment, then its rebirth.

Through photos, videos and archives, I invite you to explore every stage of this metamorphosis. And soon, to spend the night here.
